More on the drive
We came down on the new road 003 from Yuma in January and got lost San Louis De Rio Colorado on the Mexican side. Not marked well at all and after talking to others if you come down 95 from Yuma after you cross the boarder stay on 2nd Street for 8 blocks or so and when you see a Red Cross building on your left turn right onto 003. The road is slow with a lot of farm traffic.
If you are coming from San Diego you can save time by getting off of 8 and going to Mexicali and take 005 the road to San Filipe down to 004 and go East on 004 to 003 where you will take a right to El Golfo De Santa Clara.
The road to El Golfo is rough but they are working on it diligently and it should be much better in a few months. Hopefully the signage will improve as well.

The new Cost Highway from Rocky Point to El Gulfo is great, and only took one hour and 15 minutes to get to El Gulfo. But a lot of the road is still under construction and there are parts of the old road that the holes are huge. You just need to be really paying attention and be aware of the holes. I took the road on February 23rd, and went from RP to Mexicalli, then back to RP. It took just about 4 hours to get there. The road crews were trying to fill in some of the holes, but you still need to be careful. You also will go from paved to dirt, paved to dirt. The dirt road was better than the paved in my opinion. When the road is complete, it will be great. I drove and SUV so it was not too bad. It was a beautiful drive along the water.
